У дитинстві Дітер запам'ятав, як літак пікірував на його будинок, саме тоді він вирішив стати льотчиком. В післявоєнній Німеччині не було авіації. В 18 років Дітер відправляється до Америки, в новий для нього світ, і потрапляє у військово-повітряні сили. В 1966 році він був збитий над Лаосом. Потім - полон, звільнення.
