At Fatima's grave, a Darvesh (Kader Khan) advice young Sikandar how to deal with the realities of life. Young Sikandar works hard and grows up to be a wealthy and respected young man. Kamna, who stills wants to have nothing to do with Sikandar, is unaware that he has been helping her all along by paying for her handicapped father's medical bills. Sikandar meets a dancing girl, Zohra Bai (Rekha) who falls in love with him at first sight, but Sikandar still loves Kamna. Dilawar (Amjad Khan), a vengeful lover of Zohra, declares Sikandar to be his enemy. When a young lawyer, Vishaul (Vinod Khanna) saves Sikandar's life, Sikandar takes him in to his home and treats him more than a brother. Vishaul who knows nothing of Sikandar's feeling for Kamna. Becomes Ramnath's assistant and falls in love with Kamna. Before Sikandar can declare his love to Kamna, his life long dream is shattered when he see her in Vishaul's arm. Sikandar feels he has been betrayed by his best friend and by his love.

Somnath (Somu) lives in a shanty house in a Delhi slum with his widowed mom, and unmarried sister, Sarla. He is friendly with Calcutta-based wealthy Vikram (Vicky) Maharaj. When Vicky's dad, Damodar, has a heart attack and is advised to take bed-rest for two months, Vicky fills in his father's shoes, has a confrontation with a senior employee and union leader, Bipinlal Pandey, which results in a strike. His father intervenes, asks Vicky to apologize to Bipinlal, which Vicky does, and everything returns to normal. Vicky confides about his humiliation with Somu, and both conspire to teach Bipinlal a lesson. As a result, Somu accompanies Vicky to Calcutta, gets a job as a laborer in his mill, befriends his fellow-workers, gets some monetary relief to injured workers, amongst other benefits, is elected as the union leader replacing Bipinlal. With Somu as the union leader and Vicky as the boss there is no stopping these two - until Damodar finds out and decides to put a stop to Vicky being influenced by Somu's middle-class ideas and ideals. Damodar starts a chain of events that get out of control, events that may well see the death of one of the friends at the hands of the other. Will Vicky's and Somu's friendship see them through or will it also be a casualty?

Years later Bishan return as an adult only to renew his friendship with Kishan who is also an adult; Bishan then finds that Kishan has a golden voice which cannot be recognize in the village but can be heart rendering in the world of music in the city. Meanwhile Kishan is introduced to Bishan's wife, Sheela and son, Munna. Bishan decides to make all arrangements to take Kishan to the city; at first he refuses but later on agrees when Bishan convinces him. In the city Kishan gets to perform in his first singing concert which turns out to be a success rendering Kishan as an over-night star; his life changes when he gets to learn that Bishan's uncle and his son, Jagdish has embezzled all the family's assets and money, his wife and son is no longer with him and he had borrowed huge sums of money to fund him as a star. Kishan then decides he will use his musical talents to fund back his friend thus stabling him back to square one but unfortunately Bishan is hold as a hostage by his uncle and Jagdish on a yacht he once owned and is forced into confessing that he had a hand in abducting numerous school children. When Kishan gets word about this it stresses him into being a mentally unfit patient who is admitted to a mental asylum.
