Правдива історія двох молодих словацьких євреїв Фредді й Вальтера, депортованих до Аушвіца в 1942 р. 10 квітня 1944 після ретельного планування та з допомогою інших в’язнів їм вдається втекти. З надією, що їхні свідчення можуть врятувати життя інших, вони крізь гори дістаються Словаччини й через випадкові зустрічі сягають руху опору й Червоного Хреста — щоб зібрати детальну доповідь про геноцид у концтаборі. Та поки діє нацистська пропаганда й міжнародні зв’язки Німеччини, свідчення євреїв видаються надто страшними, щоб бути правдивими.
