In a mosque, a young Muslim woman has just bared to Allah the fact of her broken soul. She is repulsed by her husband Aziz, with who she was placed into an arranged marriage by her father when she was sixteen. Aziz quotes Allah as he beats her in finding any reason to doubt her devotion to him. She admits that she does fantasize about being freer in her life, however they are purely fantasies as she submits wholly to Allah. She is placed into a conflicted situation internally with this submission to Allah, as she cannot tolerate what Aziz does to her in his name. Two further issues exacerbate that conflict. First, she is raped and impregnated by her paternal Uncle Hakim, her father refusing to acknowledge that his brother did anything wrong. The pair engages in a passionate affair, and impulsively decides to embark on a 'world tour' to their arbitrary favorite destinations -Barcelona, Denver and Tonga- which they finance by cashing rent and warrants from many interested persons for the fine residence of an old lady Thera was in fact just house-sitting. Dennis van der Horst is a kind-hearted young entrepreneur. He lives by the rules of the street. The only people he feels any responsibility for are his brother Marco and his family, who are not very well off. When Dennis gets the chance to obtain an extremely expensive but lucrative taxi-license, he seizes it. In the presence of the manager of MOTAX, the only taxi company in Amsterdam, Dennis borrows a very large sum of money. Dennis is beside himself with joy. The hustling is over. Soon however Dennis finds out that there was a reason why it was so easy for him to obtain such a scarce license. The law is being altered, allowing competition on the taxi market. The licenses of Dennis and many of his colleagues all at once become worthless. As of that moment there is a war going on in the streets of Amsterdam. Dennis gets deeper into trouble when he finds out that he has unwittingly become part of the criminal organization behind MOTAX.
