Time exposure shows us Coney Island at night, from Luna Park to Dreamland. Panning left, brilliant lights come into view, defining a long, narrow strip of rides and attractions. We're up, looking out and down. One ride spins. The sign "Luna Park" comes into view. The pan continues, marking the distance to Dreamland, a larger area with fewer lights: the Steeple Chase and a Ferris wheel are near the back. Then the camera at eye level takes us to close-ups of buildings in Luna Park. Rides spin, pavilions beckon. The camera plans slowly right. It picks one tall structure and pans down and up, ending with a shot of an empty sky.

On an isolated stretch of the California coast, a young musician comes to compose. The sea inspires his music, which charms a nymph from an ancient and magnificent cypress - she is the tree's soul. The man falls in love with her and pursues her. She retreats, and her spirit speaks to him from the tree offering him a choice - to cast himself into the sea, a certain death, with the chance that they would be united, or to turn away and live his life with her memory. Will he choose to be the sound of the sea?

To blend in, both cover themselves with found objects, such as algae and sponges. We watch them move, eat, greet each other, and fight. They have small mandibles and large claws. Near them are spirograph worms, 6 inches long, with a plume of branchiae that fan out like exploding fireworks. We see vibrating cilia, 0.001 mm long, on the branchiae, sending food toward the mouth at the plume's center. Chopin's music and an off-screen narrator suggest we're watching a ballet.
