In the early 19th century the Romanian Theodor Diamant was inspired by the French utopian socialist Charles Fourier and established one of Fourier's "phalansteries" in Rumania. The film dramatizes the origins and demise of this effort, called the "Scaieni Phalanstery (the term is derived from "phalanx" and "monastery"). Among the socio-political commentary that is conveyed throughout, there is an important collusion between the army and the wealthy landowners of the time, and as the film points out in its own way, neither of these groups has ever been convicted of socialist/utopian tendencies.

Заінтригований можливістю отримати тону капусти всього за 20 євро, містянин Шербан вирішує провести рік у селі і працювати на землі, аби побачити, чому ці люди втрапляють у безвихідь і чи існує інший шлях. Мер і деякі селяни мають ідеї й можливі рішення. Та чи зможуть вони подолати взаємну недовіру між фермерами, їхній страх «колективних господарств» та сильну жагу до конкуреції? Фільм розповідає історію професора лінгвістики, який, не зумівши завершити працю всього свого життя, ухвалює рішення про самогубство. Але в день, коли він планував здійснити задумане, в нього потрапляє блискавка. Всупереч всьому професорові вдається не тільки зберегти життя, але і знайти втрачену молодість. Проте він вимушений змінити ім'я і бігти з країни, щоб сховатися від переслідувань нацистів, охочих використовувати феномен, що відбувся з ним, для створення нової людської раси.
