Widowed factory hand Len Spud becomes a billionaire after inventing a new kind of toilet roll, Bumfresh, buying a palatial mansion, complete with staff and celebrity butler Warwick Davis, for himself and twelve-year old son Joe. Joe feels alienated by the new life-style, trying to fit in at the local school by keeping his wealth a secret and wary of Len's gold-digging new girlfriend Sapphire Diamond. Unfortunately Len reveals Joe's identity and he is surrounded by greedy new 'friends', with his one true friend Bob feeling betrayed and refusing to take his money. Consequently Joe decides to use his money to do good but then something happens to provide Len with a wake-up call to make things better between him and his son.

Georgie Godwin, housebound for 23 years,is the fattest man in Britain, a tourist attraction, thanks to greedy 'agent', cabbie Morris who brings visitors to Rochdale to hear Georgie sing and - rather to his annoyance - touch him. Devoted neighbour Janice is Georgie's only other regular outside contact until he meets Amy, a pregnant teenager fleeing a violent boyfriend ,whom he takes in as a lodger. Touched by his kindness she feels he demeans himself and wants him to lose weight for his own safety. Morris, however, encourages Georgie to pile on the pounds as a money-spinner for them both, arranging for him to take part in a local television weigh-in, to see if he is fatter than rival claimant Big Brian. Amy is horrified but Georgie sees it as almost a calling. Will he beat Brian or will tragedy strike the fattest man in Britain?

Then one day he finds a huge collection of jewels in a biscuit tin and discovers she was once a notorious burglar, the Black Cat, though she was never caught as she never tried to sell her spoils. Ben decides they should pull off the biggest heist of all, stealing the Crown Jewels from the Tower of London, using his intimate knowledge of plumbing to enter. Despite his parents' disastrous attempt to get him on the dance floor and the intrusive Neighbourhood Watch warden Parker the couple effect their daring plan. They do not succeed but are allowed to escape by a Royal personage, whom they happen to meet. Sadly Granny does not make it to Christmas but her legacy lives on - in the millions raised for charity by her jewels and the profound effect she has had on the Royal personage.
