Maroso Golfetto is a firm manager from Veneto who is always yelling at his employees, all either immigrants or Southern Italians. He regularly appears on the local TV channel where he keeps denouncing the evils of immigration and is very popular with everybody including with kids. His speech hits home better than that of Lucia, their anti-racist schoolmistress. And what will be will be : by dint of invoking the help of God to rid Veneto of its immigrants the miracle finally happens : one morning they have all disappeared. But is that really a blessing ?

Now in the Far North (i.e. Milan!), Alberto has accepted to manage a program for efficiency improvement in the Italian Post. He devotes all his time and all his energy to this noble (?) task and neglects his wife Silvia, which of course annoys her beyond limits. Things do not fare much better in Castellabate where it is rather Maria, Matta's wife, who gets on his nerves by always blaming him for his lack of ambition. One day, due to a misunderstanding, Mattia is transferred to... Milan! And on whose doorstep does he land? Alberto's of course!

Accio (Elio Germano) and Manrico (Riccardo Scamarcio) are working class brothers who live in Italy in the 1960s. While his brother becomes drawn into left-wing politics, Accio, the hotheaded younger brother, is taken under the wing of a market trader and while under his influence, joins the Fascist party. Accio ("Bully") is a nickname he is proud of because it makes him seem tough. Manrico and their sister Violetta are alarmed to hear their brother listening to Benito Mussolini's speeches in his room. Manrico often physically torments his brother, including stuffing his head in the barrel under the drain pipe of their house.
