У 1985 році двоє альпіністів - Джо Сімпсон і Саймон Етс - вирушили підкоряти західний схил Сеула Гранді в Перуанських Андах. Їхньою головною метою був семитисячник, що до цього часу ще не підкорився жодному альпіністові. Цей фільм-реконструкцію знято в досить незвичайній манері: у документальній частині Сімпсон і Атс через двадцять років розповідають, як усе було, у той же час, як молоді актори серед снігів і льоду грають їх жахливу історію. Джо Сімпсон ламає ногу. Атс вирішує спускати друга донизу. Крижана краса Анд виявляється жахом, від якого кров холоне в жилах. Присутність у кадрі живих прототипів героїв фільму розвіює сумніви про те, як усе закінчиться. Але, як не дивно, напруга від цього не слабшає. Якщо порівнювати „Торкаючись безодні” з простим ігровим фільмом про альпіністів - від радянської „Вертикалі” до голлівудського „Скелелаза” - виявляється, що справжня історія, розказана живими людьми, здатна вразити значно більше, ніж будь-які фантазії сценаристів.

Кінострічка повністю знята на стаціонарну камеру. На екрані можна побачити велике ковадло і трьох працівників. Коваль, що стоїть посередині нагріває стрижень металу і кладе на ковадло, а ковалі обабіч по черзі починають бити по металу молотами, щоб надати йому форму. Після того, як стрижень охолонув, його знову кладуть у вогонь. Під час невеличкої перерви, поки розігрівається метал актори п’ють пиво та знову беруться до роботи.
Сюжет
Кінострічка повністю знята на стаціонарну камеру. На екрані можна побачити велике ковадло і трьох працівників. Коваль, що стоїть посередині нагріває стрижень металу і кладе на ковадло, а ковалі обабіч по черзі починають бити по металу молотами, щоб надати йому форму.
