На стилізованій сцені театру Но розгортається трагічна історія лейтенанта Сіндзі Такеями та його дружини Рейко. Після невдалого військового перевороту 1936 року офіцер отримує наказ стратити своїх товаришів, але не може зрадити ні честь, ні дружбу. Перед обличчям неминучого він проводить останню ніч із дружиною в атмосфері любові, відчаю та приреченості. Разом вони обирають шлях спільної смерті: він здійснює сеппуку, а вона слідує за ним. Фільм перетворює ритуал смерті на поетичне розмірковування про обов’язок, патріотизм, кохання й самознищення.
