Расмане на прізвисько Боло — 16-річний підліток-шахтар, який видобуває золото у Бантарі, Буркіна-Фасо. Як усі підлітки його віку, він грайливий і мрійливий. Його побут організований довкола приготування їжі, роботи у галереї та спуску на глибину понад 100 метрів для видобутку золота. Його надії висять на мотузці, що піднімається з глибини і кінця якій не видно. Він сподівається знайти золото, за допомогою якого зможе побудувати своє майбутнє. Але довгі дні праці не приносять плодів. З плином часу та випробуваннями його тіло змінюється, риси стають більш виразними. Він поступово втрачає дитячу невинність. Коли Расмане нарешті добуває мішки руди, він доставляє їх у «яар» — «місто», збудоване з нуля на краю шахт.Там він знайомиться з 12-річним Міссою і 13-річним Драманом — двома друзями з тачками, які займаються перевезенням руди з золотодобувних шахт.
