У 1985 році двоє альпіністів - Джо Сімпсон і Саймон Етс - вирушили підкоряти західний схил Сеула Гранді в Перуанських Андах. Присутність у кадрі живих прототипів героїв фільму розвіює сумніви про те, як усе закінчиться. Але, як не дивно, напруга від цього не слабшає. Якщо порівнювати „Торкаючись безодні” з простим ігровим фільмом про альпіністів - від радянської „Вертикалі” до голлівудського „Скелелаза” - виявляється, що справжня історія, розказана живими людьми, здатна вразити значно більше, ніж будь-які фантазії сценаристів.
