Сюжет
У 1990-і роки Вайда знову звертається до теми війни, окупації. Канонада супроводжує весь фільм "Страсний тиждень" (1995). Варшава 1943 року. Повстання... Героїню - єврейку Ірену Лілієн, дочку професора, якій вдалося втекти від гестапо, ховає сім'я поляків Малецьких. Але перепочинок триває недовго: до кінця тижня повстання придушене, місто горить. Проте Ірена продовжує боротьбу за життя... Два полюси ставлення до Ірени: стоїчний, тихий і непохитний захист цієї зовсім чужої їй жінки, до того ж колишньої коханої її чоловіка, з боку Ганни Малецької і шпигунство господині будинку Петровської - уособлення міщанства, глибинного антисемітизму та хамства. Мабуть, ще ніколи Вайда не таврував ненависні йому риси у своїх співвітчизників з такою точністю і знанням людської психології.
