In World War II Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia, a childless couple, Josef and Marie Cizek, can only watch while the Jewish family of their employers, the Wieners, are first removed from their own home to a spare room in their house by the Nazis, then deported to Theresienstadt concentration camp. Years later, young David Wiener, the sole surviving member of that family has managed to escape and make it to the Cizeks. Although fully aware of the extreme danger of harbouring a Jew in the Third Reich, the Cizek's can not permit themselves to leave David to certain death and agree to hide him. However, this decision leads to terrible danger of discovery by the Nazis and especially their friend and Nazi collaborator, Horst Prohazka, who is attracted to Marie. With desperate cleverness and luck, the Cizeks struggle to keep the secret, even when Horst begins to suspect. In doing so, they find themselves making unorthodox choices and learning about the true nature of the people around them.

Відсидівши майже п'ятнадцять років у в'язниці, колишній власник готелю Ян Дітє відправляється на постійне місце проживання в Судети і поселяється в одному з покинутих біженцями будинків. Переосмисливши прожите життя, заспокоєний і умиротворений, він згадує свою молодість, яка відбулася у постійному прагненні до збагачення. Починаючи свій шлях з роздрібної торгівлі, він стає офіціантом, змінюючи за допомогою протекції свого нового знайомого скромну пивну на фешенебельний ресторан. Одруження на етнічної німкені дозволило знайти роботу і після гітлерівської окупації. В кінці війни Ліза привезла колекцію рідкісних поштових марок, зібрану нею в будинках виселених євреїв. Продаж марок, отриманих таким шляхом, дозволила Яну стати мільйонером і власником готелю. Ціною успіху стало життя Лізи, яка намагалася врятувати марки під бомбардуванням, і арешт самого Дітє, після націоналізації його майна новими комуністичною владою.

Продаж марок, отриманих таким шляхом, дозволила Яну стати мільйонером і власником готелю. Ціною успіху стало життя Лізи, яка намагалася врятувати марки під бомбардуванням, і арешт самого Дітє, після націоналізації його майна новими комуністичною владою.

Сучасна картина, яка намагається відповісти на питання - чи можлива справжня любов в сучасному світі? Чи вміємо ми все ще любити? Чи маємо ми ще шанс? Або сучасний світ надто складний і багато перешкод не дозволяють нам знайти свою любов? Чи є в нас якийсь вибір?Сім молодих людей у віці від 23 до 33 років в кінці дев'яностих у великому місті пробують практикувати щось, про що колись говорили любовні стосунки.
Вони хочуть зробити своє життя простіше, а воно виявляється складніше. Майже всі із них роблять спроби зав'язати «серйозні» стосунки, які обертаються конфліктами і ведуть і розчаруванням, а герої знов залишаються самотніми.
Але при цьому, самотність ще не означає пустоту душі. Це виявляється якоюсь новою рисою.
