У день десятирічного ювілею одруження шкільного професора Пепіно Кастаньяно з дружиною Амалією, йому нарешті вдається вмовити її зняти зі стіни вітальні портрет її першого чоловіка Антоніо ді Козімо, який загинув 20 років тому на фронті під час війни з Росією. Та коли прийшли гості, задзвонив дзвінок і на порозі появився цей самий Антоніо, живий і здоровий. Що ж робити Амалії, адже у неї тепер два чоловіки?
Сюжет

The day of Chief Constable Saracino begins badly when his new car is stolen. Then, in his office, he meets Alfredo Fiori who believes that his wife and her lover, a veterinary, are trying to murder him. Fiore has a witness: a parrot! During his day of work in search of his stolen car, Saracino finds out the thefts of the custom officer Mastrillo, who tries to bribe him, and the faked colonel Mazza, ran away from an asylum who convinces him to have found out a new Landru, but it was only the set of a movie. In the evening, at last, Don Amilcare recovers Saracino's car, so he can say that all is well that ends well.

The story takes inspiration from a real case (Bruneri/Canella, Italy 1926). A man is hospitalized in a neurological clinic. He suffers from amnesia. Mrs Ballerini, after had seen his picture on the newspaper, realizes he is her husband and brings him her home. Also Mrs Polacich recognizes him as her husband. More, at one point he is brought to the court as Mr. Lo Bianco accused to be a thief. But soon all his identities are found false for different reasons. He will remain alone with just a dog as a friend.

Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Antonio Capurro, un ladruncolo travestito da prete, viene arrestato dal maresciallo Cottone. In seguito, durante un bombardamento il lestofante riesce a impossessarsi della divisa del poliziotto, lasciandogli l'abito talare. Inizia così una serie di comiche disavventure per i due, che devono eludere i nazi-fascisti che occupano il paese e nascondere i soldati alleati che stanno arrivando di nascosto. Alla fine, il paese verrà liberato ed Antonio sfuggirà ancora una volta al poliziotto.

Tra suo figlio maggiore, Raffaele, e la figlia di Aristide, Irene si instaura un rapporto di odio-amore e la situazione in casa si fa sempre più insostenibile.
