The day of Chief Constable Saracino begins badly when his new car is stolen. Then, in his office, he meets Alfredo Fiori who believes that his wife and her lover, a veterinary, are trying to murder him. Fiore has a witness: a parrot! During his day of work in search of his stolen car, Saracino finds out the thefts of the custom officer Mastrillo, who tries to bribe him, and the faked colonel Mazza, ran away from an asylum who convinces him to have found out a new Landru, but it was only the set of a movie. In the evening, at last, Don Amilcare recovers Saracino's car, so he can say that all is well that ends well.

The story takes inspiration from a real case (Bruneri/Canella, Italy 1926). A man is hospitalized in a neurological clinic. He suffers from amnesia. In seguito, durante un bombardamento il lestofante riesce a impossessarsi della divisa del poliziotto, lasciandogli l'abito talare. Aristide Paoloni salva dal Tevere dove si era gettato Gennaro Vaccariello. Il fatto gli torna comodo anche perchè le elezioni sono vicine. Ma il giorno dopo il salvataggio Gennaro si presenta a casa sua e gli chiede di essere ospitato: Aristide gli ha ridato la vita ed ora questa vita é una sua responsabilità . Sempre per via delle elezioni Paoloni accetta e così Vaccariello si installa a casa del commedatore portando con sè i sei figli e uno zio a carico. Tra suo figlio maggiore, Raffaele, e la figlia di Aristide, Irene si instaura un rapporto di odio-amore e la situazione in casa si fa sempre più insostenibile. Ma quando scopre che lo aspetta una condanna a morte grazie alla testimonianza di Giuseppe, pagato da Greta, rivele la verità agli americani e riesce a convincerli con l'aiuto della... Smorfia.
