В основі кінострічки лежить історія чеського студента Яна Палаха, який 16 січня 1969 року вчинив самоспалення на Вацлавській площі на знак протесту проти радянської окупації Чехословачинни. Комуністична влада всіляко приховувала та дискредитувала інформацію про цей протест. У таких умовах адвокатка Даґмар Бурешова взялася захищати гідність героя, його родини, стояти за головні людські цінності – правду, справедливість, честь і відвагу. Двадцята річниця смерті Яна Палаха у 1989 році надихнула вільно мислячих людей на подальші протести, які зрештою таки призвели до падіння комунізму у Чехословаччині та падіння залізної завіси в Європі. Переслідувана до того право захисниця Даґмар Бурешова стала першим Міністром юстиції вільної Чехословаччини.
