Tom's owner is having a cookout. Jerry sees this, and develops a taste for steak himself, but Tom stops him with a barbecue fork. They fence with forks. Jerry sends Tom flying toward the human; Tom spears him in the rear, and his master clamps Tom's head in the hot grill basket. Jerry tries to sneak up underneath a badminton shuttlecock; Tom spots him, and slams the birdie into the net, where it rebounds into the human's mouth and Jerry falls out. The man slams the racket onto Tom's head. Jerry next fires a soda bottle over Tom's head and onto the grill; Tom gets a fizzy mouthful of soda as punishment. Finally, the man is eating; Tom starts grilling a steak, but Jerry jams Tom's tail into the grill. When Tom realizes his tail is on fire, he starts running, crashing into the man, then diving into the pool. The man rescues Tom from drowning, then clobbers him (off screen) and ties him to the chaise longue. Jerry drags Tom into the street and hooks him onto the bumper of a passing car; with the cat gone, Jerry punches the bone out of the center of a steak and starts eating it from the middle.

Jerry, fed up with Tom's harassment, decides to become a mouse astronaut and go off into space, where there are no cats. He packs his valise. Jerry goes to the astronauts' training center, takes a series of tests, and is declared fit for service. Meanwhile, Tom has become an alcoholic tramp. He hides in a pipe and soon finds himself being shot into space on a rocket. Tom gets into the cabin and harasses Jerry, who's inside. Tom is ejected and reaches another spaceship whose astronaut is a Soviet dog! Tom is hit by a shower of meteorites and falls through space, landing on the ground after a dizzying descent. There he finds Jerry, proudly sporting an astronaut's license. Tom sets it on fire. Jerry starts to chase him, and Tom takes to his heels.

Although young and beautiful, schoolteacher Anne Gladden fears a dull future. She finally decides to take a walk on the wild side, splurging on some fashionable new clothes and setting off to find adventure. Her new confidence inspires her to flirt with complete strangers. When a gangster pays unwanted attention to her, she ditches him and flees in his car, unaware that there's a corpse in the trunk. Determined to recover his stolen vehicle and its incriminating cargo the thug begins a desperate search. The oblivious Anne, comes to the aid of a handsome young man stranded alongside the road. Romance blooms, but after the shocking discovery of a body in the trunk, the duo decide they have to return the car. The bickering lovebirds head back to the city, trailed by both the angry gangster and the cops, who suspect the young couple of murder.
