Джюнпей і Канта жили собі разом з родиною на невеличкому острові Шикотан і мріяли подорожувати на Галактичній залізниці, про яку читали в улюбленій книзі батьків. Їхній батько входив у загін "Акацукі", що захищав острів. Але після закінчення Другої світової війни острів Шикотан переходить у підпорядкування Радянського Союзу. Загін "Акацукі" розформовують і більшість військових відправляють у Сибір. Батька арештовують за роздавання рису. Цивільних переселяють з острова. Джюнпей і Канта опиняються у незнайомих їм краях.
