У невеликому мексиканському містечку Тампіко знайомляться два бідняки Доббс і Кертін. Від місцевого старого вони дізнаються про золоту жилу в околицях Сьєрра Мадре. Вклавши усі свої гроші в справу, троє друзів рушають у небезпечну подорож. Дістатися туди було дуже важко, але зберегти тверезий розум побачивши жовтий метал і повернутися живим ще складніше.
