Під час його знаменитої "Білої Одіссеї" - подорожі довжиною в 8600 кілометрів з узбережжя Аляски до канадського Квебека - Ваньє зустрів реально існуючого Нормана Вінтера, який дійсно вже давно ховається від руйнівної цивілізації в незайманих лісах Півночі. Ваньє вирішив зняти фільм про останнього мисливця, але тут, на погляд критиків, дещо помилився з формою - замість об'єктивної документальної стрічки Ваньє раптом зняв фільм ігровий. Тобто всі герої "Мисливця" грають самих себе, але при цьому за сценарієм режисера. І тому, при всій своїй неймовірній красі, фільм вийшов просвітницьким і повчальним - в дусі освітніх передач для школярів, а вкладені в уста головного героя слова звучать явно неприродно.
