Сюжет
Молода талановита скрипалька Марта, приїхавши на навчання в США, знайомиться з відомим диригентом, у якого багато років тому був роман з її матір'ю. Джон Лясоцький після тривалої еміграції вирішує відвідати рідне польське місто і виступити з місцевим симфонічним оркестром, яким керує чоловік Марти - Адам. В ході репетицій оркестру виявляється різниця між двома диригентами: мудрим і доброзичливим маестро Лясоцьким і амбітним і деспотичним Адамом. Приїзд великого музиканта відображається і на сімейних відносинах молодої пари.
