У готелі Хакслі поселився дивний постоялець, який не платить за житло, вживає алкоголь великими дозами й ходить у бар у халаті. Зважаючи на це все, великий шахіст Аркадій Балаган вирішив улаштуватися тут надовго і в чому криється причина такої його поведінки? Проблемний постоялець страждає агорафобією – страхом відкритого простору, тому не може покинути готель. Таку хворобу він одержав після того, як став свідком убивства своєї нареченої.
