Фільм розказує про долю дослідника-любителя Тімоті Тредвелла, що присвятив себе вивченню звичок найлютішого ведмедя на планеті — ґрізлі. Життя Тредвелла обірвалося в жовтні 2003 року на Алясці. Величезний ведмідь розірвав дослідника і його подругу під час чергової подорожі. Впродовж картини друзі і колеги Тімоті намагаються зрозуміти причини його незвичайного захоплення і відповісти, що примушує сучасну людину відмовитися від благ цивілізації на користь дружби з ведмедем.
