The story of menstruation begins, as the motherly narrator informs us, with the pituitary gland - a gland at the base of the brain that sends hormones throughout the bloodstream that order growth. When a girl reaches an age somewhere between 11 and 17 - the average is 13 - the pituitary gland sends maturing orders to the ovaries, which in turn order the uterus to create a thickened lining, filled with watery fluids and blood. If an egg is fertilized it will remain within that thickened lining for nourishment. But if the egg is not fertilized, the body has no use for the extra nourishment, and it passes out of the body - which is the process called menstruation. The narrator proceeds to disprove taboos against bathing or exercise during menstruation. She advises that girls should keep a calendar that keeps track of the number days between periods. And she notes how good posture, healthy foods and positive attitudes can affect the menstruation cycle.

Vulgar Fractions ostensibly begins as a physical exploration of seven unique state intersections along Nebraska, but eventually reveals itself as more concerned with attempting to uncover an underlying metaphysical construction that feeds ideas of both real and imaginary borders. In this examination, interrelationships are considered dialectically--land/sky, bordered/borderless, old/new tech--while moments of stasis are shown as being sublated by entropy. Vulgar Fractions was shot entirely single frame with a digital camera and an intervalometer. Sound is composed from field recordings taken on location. Additional samples of farm machinery taken by Seth Chrisman, Jon Rhodig and Scott Thompson. Made with the kind support of the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts.

Realizing that an explosion is pending, the turtle ducks and takes cover inside his shell just in time to avoid immolation from the explosion. As the scene changes to a picnicking All-American Family, a voice-over explains that in order to survive a nuclear attack, one must duck and cover.

But it also provides us with what we must deal, including joys, happiness, sorry and anxiety. These thoughts are interpreted through a series of snapshots and sounds - some, what we now take for granted as being givens, but some more disturbing - combined in such a way to make one ponder if life is indeed better than it was thirty years ago.

Chris Landreth introduces himself to us in a funky restroom and then introduces the film's subject, Ryan Larkin, a brilliant animator in the 1960s and early 1970s. Chris shows us clips of "Walking" and "Street Musique," Ryan's ground-breaking shorts. We now see Ryan as he is: emaciated, alcoholic, much of his mind gone; we meet Felicity Fanjoy, his love during his creative period, and Derek Lamb, his producer. Ryan talks to Chris in the dining hall of what is probably a homeless shelter or soup kitchen. Chris tries an intervention. We follow Ryan out into the street where he panhandles. The animation, which uses live footage, reveals the ravaged burned-out graceful man.
