It is late in the Ceausescu era in Romania, and Cristina is having a difficult time with her boyfriend. He wants her to have sex with him before he goes off to do his obligatory stint in the army. She wants him to marry her first. She also gets involved with a slightly rebellious actor, a would-be ladies' man. He has some vague plans to defect - could those be the reason he is receiving mysterious phone calls? Or are they the work of his anonymous admirer?

Після повернення з роботи генетик Девід Вітмен поцілував дружину й доньку. І таким чіном заразив їх токсином швидкої дії. Минуло десять років. Вітмен працює експертом НАТО. Його долучають до розслідування пожежі на хімічному заводі в Німеччині. Винуватець того, що трапилося, – Йозеф Мюллер – ймовірно заражений тим самим штамом, який вбив дружину й доньку Вітмена. Будь-хто, до кого доторкається носій токсину, помирає через декілька хвилин. Разом зі співробітницею Держдепартаменту США Голлі Андерсен Девид іде по сліду Мюллера, що він залишає на своєму шляхові. Попри всі зусилля агітаторів, люди неохоче вступають до Комуністичної Партії, і взагалі, Румунія досі лишається 100% центральноєвропейською капіталістичною країною за ментальністю. Саме в цей час молоді Янку та Мара вирішують одружитися. Батьки запрошують гостей, ріжуть корови й свині та дістають з льохів добірне румунське вино. Та от невдача! Несподівано помирає радянський вождь Іосіф Сталін і комуністи на 7 днів забороняють будь-які забави, в акурат перед самісіньким весіллям! Невже доведеться викидати наїдки та виливати трунки? Ні! Весілля таки вирішують зіграти, але тихо...
