8.1 Сюжет
Головна ідея фільму будується на припущенні, що для торжества зла вистачає простої бездіяльності добрих людей, тобто байдужості. Головний герой Сміт — звичайна наївна людина, яких тисячі, мільйони. Цинічні політики вибирають його до свого кола задля заміни померлого сенатора. Вони впевнені, що новачком можна буде легко маніпулювати через авторитетного у штаті сенатора Пейна. Сміт вирушає у Вашінґтон, сповнений ідеалів і мрій про спільну працю зі своїм ідолом Пейном. Він не розуміє, що від нього очікується роль маріонетки, що має схвалити шахрайську аферу з побудовою дамби, прибуток від якої дістанеться Пейну та його подільникам... Врешті, чи отримає суспільство правдивого охоронця демократичних ідеалів?
