Циркові мавпи нестямно волають в своїх клітках, а зовні люди вмирають і вбивають один одного. Це ще один цирк — Іспанська громадянська війна. Проти своєї волі Рудий клоун іде в ряди народного війська і бере участь в кривавій бійні. У бій проти солдатів Національної гвардії він йде, озброєний мачете і одягнений в блазеньське вбрання.Багато років опісля, за часів диктатора Франка, Хавьєр, син рудого клоуна, знаходить роботу Білого (сумного) клоуна в цирку, населеному дивними персонажами. Тепер він дружить з людиною-гарматне ядро і сварливою родинною парою дресировщиків собак, а на арені стає партнером Рудого клоуна Серхіо.
Серце цієї історії — заплутаний любовний трикутник, в якому Хавьєр і Серхіо, під дією пристрасті і ненавистю один до одного, намагаються завоювати любов найкрасивішої жінки цирку. Кожен з них готовий прийняти смерть, але не поразку в битві за красуню.
