Документальна драма за мотивами однойменної книги, письменника/режисера Фреда Костера розповідає правдиву історію дружби між легендою американського морського флоту Джоном Ріплі (John Ripley) і в'єтнамським героєм Ле Ба Біном (Le Ba Binh). Обидва воювали разом під час війни у В’єтнамі, фільм розповідає про їхню спільну боротьбу та події після падіння В’єтнаму, коли Ріплі повертається додому до розділеної Америки, тоді як Ле Ба Бін потрапляє до в’язниці у комуністичному таборі перевиховання.

This film recounts the history and attitudes of the opposing sides of the Vietnam War using archival news footage as well as its own film and interviews. A key theme is how attitudes of American racism and self-righteous militarism helped create and prolong this bloody conflict. The film also endeavors to give voice to the Vietnamese people themselves as to how the war has affected them and their reasons why they fight the United States and other western powers while showing the basic humanity of the people that US propaganda tried to dismiss.

У Саллі Гайд (Джейн Фонда) складне матеріальне становище. Її чоловік Боб (Брюс Дерн) воює у В'єтнамі. Вона влаштовується санітаркою у військовий госпіталь, де працює її подруга Віолет (Пенелопа Мілфорд). Там вона зустрічає давнього друга, Люка Мартіна (Джон Войт). Люк повернувся з В'єтнаму паралізованим. Між ними спалахує пристрасть.
Сюжет
