Одного разу симпатичний молодий англієць Безіл отримав в спадок досить великий шматок такої дорогоцінної на острові Кріт землі, та на додачу ще і шахту. І тим самим вступив в конфлікт з жорстокими вдачами аборигенів. Здавалося вже, що йому ніколи не вдасться досягти компромісу з ними, але доля послала йому нагороду - дружбу з місцевим греком Зорбой, який через свій позитивний темперамент і доброту потихеньку починає вирішувати всі проблеми британця.
Сюжет

1896 рік. Анатолія. Молодий грек Ставрос Топузоглу живе в невеликому селі під горою Ерджіяс в Османській імперії. Разом зі своїм другом вірменином Вартаном він продає лід на місцевому ринку. І греки, і вірмени, зазнають постійних знущань та принижень з боку турків, тому Ставрос мріє про Америку — країну, яка є для нього уособленням свободи та великих можливостей. Ставши свідком одного з епізодів Хамідійської різні, під час якої гине Вартан, молодий чоловік розуміє, що готовий на все заради досягнення своєї мети.

Unknown to Illia, he gets the money for the books and all else he gives her from Mr. No Face, the local vice boss who wants Illia retired because her independence gives other whores ideas. Whose spirit is stronger: Homer's classical ideal or Illia's?
